What exactly is Thanaka?
Thanaka is a yellowish paste made from ground-up tree bark. You'll see women and children - less frequently men - wearing it to protect their skins from the blazing sun. A big circle on each cheek is the standard application, but some go for funky bars, tiger stripes, or all-over application.
Thanaka is full of vitamin E, so it's often now sold as a beauty product for use as a face mask. It's also said to contain coumarin, which is effective against acne. And it feels wonderfully cooling when it's applied to your skin.
